Closer to God?

After reading a recent post on Gracebook by Chris Welch, I started thinking about the multitude of believers who still see themselves needing to get “closer to God.” Those who believe, that performing for God will somehow get them “closer to God!”

Performing for God? Tithing, prayer, bible study, going to church…these are just some of the things believers today have been duped into believing they need to do in order to get closer to God! This is also why many today walk in the condemnation of their past as well as the fear of their future. All because they never feel like they can never do enough to “get closer to God!”

I also believed this hellish lie for much of my Christian life! And it still amazes me how, even in our everyday “Christian” conversation with one another, we continue to support the illusion of a separated God!

The Head who supposedly lives separated from the rest of His body!

Is it possible for us to get any closer than what the following passage in Deuteronomy states?

Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, “Who will ascend into heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, “Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” NO, THE (LIVING) WORD IS VERY NEAR YOU; IT (HE) IS (NOW) IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART SO YOU MAY OBEY IT(HIM). (Deuteronomy 30:11-14)

Christ IN us is our hope! There is no separated God!

And since this passage is Old Covenant teaching, how much more REAL should the revelation of “I will never leave you or forsake you” be to us today, who live not by the law, but by the New Covenant of Grace alone IN Christ alone?
